• Miniature with Cebes and an Old Man pointing to the Tabula Cebetis, facing a decorated initial with a full border, at the beginning of Philippus Albericus's Tabula Cebetis. A foreigner, Cebes, enters the temple of Saturn. He sees a painted tablet, now worn by withering age, the meaning of which he was not at all able to make out. An Old Man, who was a native of the place, saw that he and his companions were uncertain about the picture. Those whom Fortune has enriched beforehand lead a congenial life. Vainglory, Gluttony, and Pleasure embrace them. But when Fortune's gifts fail them, these people are immediately driven away; in order to recover their previous way of life, some take to murder, others to theft, and many to swearing falsely by the gods, for little reward. But some are shut up in a dark building, and these Sorrow, Lament, and Punishment afflict with sufferings. Whence they are lead to a glittering hall; when they have been purged of their crimes there, they are able to return to a better life.
